Land of Myths
Welcome!! Slow, relaxed touring is our goal, so please don’t hesitate to speak up if you want to stop for photos, a restroom, tea or coffee. During the tour, if you decide that you want to take a day off to just sit around, all we ask is that you let us know so we aren’t waiting for you. We want you to return home feeling like you’ve “really” discovered and explored the places we’ve taken you. Wed. July 7 - We will meet you at Heathrow as your flights arrive. When all members of the group have arrived, we will drive through England and into the beautiful Welsh countryside to your accommodations in Snowdonia, which will be your home for the next 3 nights. On the way, we will visit stunning Powis Castle, a medieval castle rising dramatically above its superb gardens. It was built by Welsh princes and contains a world famous garden with Italianate terraces. It houses one of the most famous collections of paintings and furniture in Wales as well as a beautiful collection of treasures from India, which are housed in the Clive museum.
Thurs. July 8 - This morning we will visit the world famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, which was built in by the great English engineer Thomas Telford and finished in 1801. Then you will get to spend some time in Llangollen
After lunch it’s time to move on to the city of Caernarfon. Caernarfon Castle is possibly the most famous of all the castles in Wales. Building started in 1283 by the English King Edward 1 during his military conquest of Wales. It was built not only as a fortress but also as a seat of government and a royal palace. Edward 1 gave Wales its first Prince of Wales who was not Welsh; it was his son, who was born at Caernarfon. It was also the place, in 1969, of the investiture of Prince Charles, the present Prince of Wales.
Fri. July 9 - Today it’s your chance to go to the top of Mount Snowdon, the tallest mountain in Wales where it is said that King Arthur and his knights are sleeping waiting for the people of Wales to wake them in their time of need. You will travel to the summit on the mountain railway, which is 4 miles long. There is a café at the top of the mountain and the views are spectacular. Before your journey you will see a short film about your trip to the top. In the afternoon from Mount Snowdon you will go over the spectacular Llanberis Pass before entering Beddgelert, Snowdonia’s prettiest village. Here you will enjoy a stroll along the river and visit the grave of ‘Gelert’ the faithful hound of Prince Llewellyn. Throughout the history of Wales, Llewellyn is known as “Llewellyn the Great” because he was the first to unite all of the Welsh princes against the invading English. The day ends with a scenic drive through Snowdonia and a visit to the world famous Swallow Falls, a stunning series of waterfalls located near the town of Betws-y-Coed.
Sat.July10 - You will start today by visiting the Welsh town which is famous for having the longest place name in the U.K. Here you will be able to take photos and pay a visit to the station gift shop. Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantisiliogogogoch. Here you will be able to take photos and pay a visit to the station gift shop. Next, we will visit Bodnant Gardens, one of the most beautiful gardens in the UK. Spanning some 80 acres, the gardens are situated above the River Conwy on ground sloping towards the west, looking across the valley towards the Snowdonia range. The garden has two parts. The upper garden around Bodnant Hall consists of the terraced gardens and informal lawns shaded by trees. The lower portion, known as the "Dell" is formed by the valley of the River Hiraethlyn and contains the Wild garden. We will then head for your hotel in Tenby, which will be our base for the next three nights.
Sun. July 11 - Today you are free to explore the medieval walled town of Tenby. Visit the harbour; take a stroll on the magnificent beach and explore the Tudor Merchants House, which was built in the 15th century. Today would be a great opportunity to take the short boat trip over to Caldey Island and visit the old priory and the 12th century St. Illtud’s church.
Mon. July 12 - This morning we head north to Cenarth. The charming conservation village of Cenarth, huddled around its spectacular falls, is a real beauty spot. These falls, a multitude of low waterfalls cascading over rock and boulders, punctuate the River Teifi as it tumbles to its estuary at Cardigan Bay. Alongside the river still stands Cenarth's 17th century flour mill, which retains its cast iron and timber wheel. Once powered by the falls, the mill has long since been used to grind grain and now houses a collection of antiquities. Extending across the river is Cenarth's 200-year-old bridge distinguishable by its cylindrical holes. You will be spending the afternoon in the smallest city in Britain, St. Davids, birthplace of our Wales’ Patron Saint and home to the magnificent 13th century Cathedral. Enjoy a guided tour of the Cathedral, which has been a popular place of pilgrimage since the middle- ages, and explore the city at your leisure.
Tues. July 13 - It’s time to head east this morning and visit Laugharne, once, home to Wales’ literary genius Dylan Thomas. This afternoon you will be treated to a scenic drive through the Brecon Beacons to Hay-on-Wye situated in some of the most varied and beautiful countryside the British Isles have to offer. The town nestles under the glorious Black Mountains and every year plays host to the U.K.’s premier literary festival attracting household names from around the world. It’s then on to your hotel in Cardiff where you will stay for the next 2 nights.
Wed. July 18 - This morning you get the opportunity of experiencing the life of a coal miner as you visit Big Pit. You will be issued with a miner’s helmet and lantern and taken underground for a tour led by one of the miners who used to work in the mine. From there it’s a short drive to Llanthony Abbey. The abbey rests in the almost secluded Llanthony valley and was founded by the Augustinium Cannons in the 12th century. The afternoon takes you on a wonderful drive down the spectacular Wye valley before you arrive at the world famous Tintern Abbey, situated in one of the most picturesque settings you can imagine. The 12th century abbey has inspired writers and painters for over two hundred years. The final visit of the day will be to the old Roman town of Isca, where you will have a chance to see the remains of a Roman barracks and a splendid amphitheatre.
Thurs. July 15 - You will spend this morning at the Museum of Welsh Life at St. Fagans just outside Cardiff. A collection of period buildings from all parts of Wales has been carefully dismantled and rebuilt. You will see how life in Wales has changed over time in the superlative Rhyd-y-car ironworkers’ cottages, which were built in about 1800. This afternoon, after a tour of Cardiff Bay, you will have time in Cardiff, Wales’ capital city, to do some last minute sightseeing and shopping. There are fascinating museums to see and you might like to take a tour of the Millenium Stadium, home of Welsh rugby.
Fri. July 16 - Today, we will return to the London for a one- night stay at The Tudor Lodge in Pinner via a visit to The Underground Gardens at Dewstow. These gardens are the recently “rediscovered” gardens and landscapes created around the turn or the century by James Pulham & Sons. The gardens had been buried during the 1940’s and 1950’s. The excavation began in 2000 and uncovered many ponds, amazing underground grottoes, tunnels and ferneries.
